Gary Rowett keen to extend midfielder’s contract

Blues boss Gary Rowett is determined to get David Davis to commit to a long-term future at St Andrews by extending his current contract – just days after the 25-year-old midfielder agreed a 12-month deal to keep him at Birmingham until the summer of 2017.

Davis, who was named man of the match in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against former club Wolves, has made 25 league appearances for the play-off chasing side this campaign, but is yet to score a goal for the Blues this season.

Rowett said: “This week saw us extend his contract by a year and that is something he thoroughly deserved.

“He’s done really well for us and like I said to him at the start of the season, ‘Regardless of how many games you play, you will be a crucial part of our squad and what we’re trying to do’.

“This season he’s come in after periods where he’s been out of the team and he’s always contributed hugely to some of the very big performances that we’ve had.”

Davis, who started his career at neighbouring Wolverhampton Wanderers, joined the Blues in the summer of 2014 and made 44 appearances in his debut season at St Andrews.

Prior to his move to Birmingham, Davis was struggling to break into Kenny Jackett’s Wolves team which at that point were in the third tier of English football.

Birmingham are currently in the hunt for a play-off position after an excellent season under Gary Rowett’s supervision.

They are currently four points off sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday but do have a game in hand over the Owls.

The Blues will be hoping that they can secure three points on Saturday against a struggling Fulham side which is in danger of dropping down to League One.
