Brentford captain wary of relegation threat

Brentford left-back Jake Bidwell has urged his side to start picking up results or face being dragged into a relegation battle.

In an interview with BBC Radio London, the Bees captain challenged his team, who are eight points above the danger zone, to halt a run of five defeats in their last six games in order to stave off the threat of relegation.

The 22-year-old said: “We are in a position now where we are getting drawn into a relegation fight, there is no point dressing it up. If we don’t start performing quickly we are going to be in trouble.”

“We have shown this season that once we perform [to the levels] we are capable of then we are a match for anyone. We have got to go out there knowing and believing how good we are.

“There are 11 games left now. It has been an up-and-down season but we want to finish it on a high.”

Brentford have only won twice in their last 11 Championship games which has put an end to any play-off aspirations the club may have had.

Instead the Bees should now be looking over their shoulders at the bottom three according to captain Bidwell, who has appeared in every single game for the London side this season.

The club have had three different men at the helm in what has been a topsy-turvy season for the Bees.

Dutch boss Marinus Dijkhuizen was sacked just eight games into the new season and was replaced by Lee Carsley who oversaw matters for two months in an interim head coach capacity.

Former Premier League defender Carsley was then replaced by former Walsall chief Dean Smith who has only won five of his 18 matches in charge of the Championship side.

The Bees face a trip to London rivals QPR in their next game with the away side desperate to put an end to their wretched run of form.
