Cellino sons in tirade against Leeds United fans

Fractious is a word that perfectly describes the relationship that has developed between  certain sections of the Leeds United support and the Cellino family. According to a report in today’s Daily Mail, this fractious feeling could be about to develop more.

Since the Italians bought a controlling share of Leeds United, the animosity between segments of the Leeds United fanbase and the Cellino family has certainly had some ramifications for the Cellino family.

A taste of this animosity and it overspilling into the private life of the Cellino family is that regarding Massimo Cellino’s daughter Eleanora. Eleanora Cellino was studying fashion at Leeds University but, after abuse from Leeds fans, swapped her place of study from Leeds to London in an attempt to escape the barbs directed at both her and her father.

Displaying her life through her Instagram account, Eleanora became an easy target for the abuse from Leeds United ‘fans’; I use the inverted commas to show that they don’t represent the actions of all Leeds supporters. At the time that all this happened, Massimo Cellino explained all in a press conference, reported by the Daily Mirror.

In the press conference, Massimo Cellino said, “I’m used to these things. Maybe it’s bad what they did to my daughter. She was loving staying at university in Leeds with my wife and me. Now she’s moving to London because she’s been through things with the fans. They tell her your father is a c-word, your father is a mother [noise to signify curse word], you are a … because of your father. And she said: ‘I don’t stay here anymore. I cannot even walk down the street’.”

That was last year, fast-forward to now and a similar furore surrounds Cellino’s sons Edoardo and Ercole and messages that have passed between them and Leeds United fans.

The Daily Mail report that Edoardo and Ercole were ‘caught’ “abusing supporters online” in what they call “expletive-laden messages on social media,” messages that the Daily Mail say were “dergoatory towards women and the disabled.”

Responding to being both himself and his father being called a “tw*t,” Edoardo first responded with the following,

CellinoEdoardo’s response to the abuse is to fire back “sbuciami il cazzo coglione succia,” an altogether not too nice response that doesn’t even bear printing here. After being reprimanded for replying in his native tongue, Edoarado is told quite bluntly to “f**k off home.” CellinoEdoardo then fires back a few replies that include him saying, “So you have to think about it before you answer cause you are a spastic?” and a final “Go f**k yourself.” Over to his brother Ercole, who had his spat over on Instagram where one female was mocked for her size, Ercole Cellino calling her a “whale” after telling her to “stop eating.”

The Daily Mail say that this recent set of remarks will lead to outrage amongst Leeds fans and further drag down relations between Leeds’ fanbase and their owners, with both Edoardo and Ercole being listed as directors of the club.

In an attempt to defuse the situation, the Daily Mail report that Edoardo released a statement apologising for his actions that read, “I would like to apologise for any offence that I have caused. After receiving a lot of abusive messages my emotions got the better of me and I reacted in a way that was unprofessional. I believe the messages were private but I know I should not have done this. I did not fully understand the severity of the words used as English is not my first language. Again, I can only apologise.”

Whilst the responses from the Cellino brothers are ill-thought out and to some degree inexcusable, there remains the oft-used modus operandi of certain sections to think about. It seems all too common for certain Leeds fans to think it is alright to abuse the Cellino family and then ‘complain’ when they receive abuse back in spades.
