Fulham to build statue of World Cup winner

Fulham have commissioned the building of a statue of George Cohen, the BBC report.

The statue will be unveiled at Craven Cottage in October.

Cohen, part of England’s World Cup winning side of 1966, spent his entire career with The Cottagers.

The 76 year old played 459 times for the club, between 1956 and 1969.

The right back won 37 caps for England and played in every game as the Three Lions won the World Cup on home soil in 1966.

Cohen is a club ambassador for Fulham and was awarded an MBE in 2000.

A supporter led group proposed the building of a statue to the club earlier this year and fans will have the opportunity to donate to the cost of the work.

Sculptor Douglas Jennings will build the statue.

Bob Howes, Chairman of the supporter group, told the Fulham website: “We’re delighted that this honour is being paid to George, a true gentleman who has given so much to the supporters of Fulham, England and the world of football.”

Fulham already have a statue of another ex England star, Johnny Haynes, outside Craven Cottage.

That statue was unveiled in 2008.

A statue of Michael Jackson was also infamously built outside the ground in 2011 by previous owner Mohamed Al Fayed, but was then taken down in 2013.

It is now in the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Fulham’s Chairman, American businessman Shahid Khan, will match all donations for the statue of Cohen.

Khan said: “It’s only appropriate that George be celebrated and honoured here at Craven Cottage by the club.”
