Derby boss gives injury update on George Thorne

Derby stand-in head coach Darren Wassall says Rams midfielder George Thorne won’t be rushed back into the side after suffering a calf injury.

Thorne’s injury has seen the Englishman miss Derby’s last two league fixtures against MK Dons and Fulham, but Head Coach Darren Wassall is hoping the 23-year-old will be back in Rams action soon.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph, Wassall provided an update on Thorne’s health “George has responded well to treatment” he said.

Thorne has been a key player for The Rams this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals, most notably a stunning 25-yard strike to seal victory for Derby over Huddersfield on 24 October. To prevent aggravating Thorne’s injury, Wassall is going to make sure the midfielder only returns when he is completely fit.

“We are certainly not going to rush him because there are a lot of games to go – seven in April – and we want him fit for the run-in.

“We will make a decision as we see fit.”

It appears unlikely Thorne will be making a return to the side in Derby’s next game away at Brentford on Saturday, however the skillful midfielder should be available and ready to play at some point in the next few weeks.
