Derby appoint Forest legend to academy staff

Derby County have appointed Nottingham Forest legend Des Walker to the clubs coaching staff, they have confirmed.

They have also appointed ex Rams player Craig Short, who will act as an under 21s coach.

Walker will be the academy’s defensive coach and both have joined Derby on initial deals which run until the end of the season.

Walker is a legend at Derby’s arch rivals Nottingham Forest, where he made over 300 appearances.

He has 59 caps for England and was part of the squad that reached the semi finals of Italia 90 under Sir Bobby Robson.

His 17 year old son Lewis recently signed for Derby from Ilkeston and has made a number of appearances for The Rams under 18s.

His other son, Tyler, is on the books of Nottingham Forest and has made first team appearances for the club.

Short, who has joined the club to provide additional coaching to the under 21 squad, made 143 appearances for Derby, over a career in which he played more than 600 times.

He was at the club as Head of Recruitment in the Academy, before moving on to be part of Gary Bowyers backroom staff at Blackburn Rovers.

He has also had spells as manager of Ferencvaros in Hungary and Notts County.

However, he has now returned to Derby on a deal until the end of the season.

Derby’s Academy Director Darren Wassall said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Des and Craig to the Academy coaching staff.

“Des is someone that has plenty to offer from a defensive point of view across the Academy and Craig, meanwhile, has worked with us previously so we’re well aware of his skills and he is a welcome addition to the Under 21 coaching staff.”
