Alex Gilbey

Second Bristol City bid for League One star rejected

Bristol City, who have been very busy in the January transfer window, have seen a second bid rejected by Colchester United for midfielder Alex Gilbey. The Bristol Post understands that the Robins are still hoping to sign a defensive-midfielder this month and have targeted the Dagenham-born man as their number one target.

The first bid was described as a ‘joke’ by Colchester boss Kevin Keen and whilst details of the second bid haven’t emerged, it still hasn’t been deemed worthy enough to be accepted by the League One strugglers.

The 21-year-old may even still remain the U’s, as Keen has revealed that the club are in discussions over a new contract for their long-serving midfielder. He made his debut for the club in October 2012.

Keen says that Gilbey is simply a player that he doesn’t want to lose and said they are doing everything they can to extend his stay at the Colchester Community Stadium,

“There has been further contact from Bristol City but we want Alex to stay and have spoken to him with the offer of a new deal.

“The bid has been rejected and Alex is looking forward to Saturday to showcase what he can do.”

Interim manager John Pemberton has already been very busy this month adding to his squad as they look to pull away from relegation. After Steve Cotterill was sacked, Lee Tomlin, Alex Pearce and Ben Gladwin have all signed on loan from AFC Bournemouth, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers respectively. Tomorrow they welcome Birmingham City to Ashton Gate, knowing a win would push them out of the bottom three.
