Rotherham United have today confirmed the loan signing of Birmingham City attacking midfielder Andrew Shinnie. He moves to the New York Stadium on a deal lasting for the rest of the season. Assuming he gets FA and Football League clearance in time, he should make his debut against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
The deal was delayed whilst Birmingham City looked to bring Diego Fabbrini back from the club, a deal which has since going through. This could only happen if Middlesbrough, where Fabbrini was on loan, signed a replacement and they did in the form of Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez. Shinnie becomes Neil Redfearn’s third signing of the window, after Luciano Becchio and Chris Burke.
Former Leeds United head coach Redfearn is delighted to further strengthen his squad and add a player of the quality and calibre that Shinnie is,
“Andrew is another terrific attacking option.
“He is someone who can play just off the front or just in behind the front. He is a real creative talent and he will give us more strings to our bow.
“He understands his position, he has played at this level for a while now and he has done well for Birmingham.
“I think that he is a player that, on his day, can unlock the best defences in this division. He will be a really good acquisition for us.”
Redfearn added that Shinnie, who will wear the number 24 shirt with the Yorkshire club, helps to provide competition for places, which in turn will mean that the subs bench is stronger, meaning they can have a better impact later in games.
