Freedman: No decision on Paul Robinson contract

Nottingham Forest are still debating over the idea of offering a contract to former Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson. Manager Dougie Freedman told the Nottingham Post that the veteran has impressed in training, but is also still thought to be keen on signing a forward instead.

Freedman only has one more available slot to fill in his squad, as Financial Fair Play ruling says they can only have 24 players. With 23 currently on the books, if Robinson is signed and Freedman still wanted to sign a striker, then he would have to sell someone to make room.

36-year-old Robinson initially retired from the game, but was invited to train with the City Ground club to initially keep himself fit, but has done so well that a permanent deal could be offered. Freedman is keen on providing competition for first-choice keeper Dorus de Vries, and although Robinson hasn’t played competitive for some time, he has made giant strides forward in training. Freedman says offering him a deal is still a real possibility,

“We have not made a decision over Paul yet.

But he did not want to retire in the manner that he did, he did not want to go out like that.

So he is still training with us and it will make it easier for me to make a decision watching him in training every day.

I have only one spot and I need to be careful what I do with that one. But he is doing himself no harm with what he is showing us. There is no question that he has the ability.”

Robinson was released by Blackburn Rovers at the end of the 2013/14 season and has been without a club ever since. The Beverley-born shotstopper is clearly still keen to get back into the game and the fact he has shown great appetite and quality in training has given Freedman a decision to make. Even if he elects not to offer him a deal, surely another club would?
