Watt set to join but Jones likely to leave Cardiff

Wales Online believes that Cardiff City are set to make Tony Watt’s loan from Charlton Athletic permanent. However they are planning for life without Kenwyne Jones, who isn’t expected to sign a new contract once it expires at the end of the season.

21-year-old Watt, who scored for former club Celtic in a Champions League victory over Barcelona in 2012, has been a big hit since moving to the Cardiff City Stadium. He instantly found himself in Russell Slade’s starting line-up, alongside Jones up front, scoring twice in five matches so far. It is believed that a £1million fee with be agreed between the two clubs, pathing way for the transfer to become permanent as early as this coming January.

However Trinidad & Tobago international Jones, who is said to be earning a wage of £35,000 a week with the Welsh club, isn’t expected to sign a contract extension. He is the highest earning player at the club and he will be offered a new contract, however he would take a big pay-cut should he sign it. Wales Online believe that sources at the club are indicating he won’t be signing an extension. Jones is free to speak to other clubs in January and Slade is hopeful he will at least remain at the club for the rest of the season, especially with the Bluebirds in with a realistic chance of making a play-off place.

It would also appear that Cardiff are planning for life without their commanding forward anyway. Watt would have been offered a permanent deal anyway but it was recently reported that the club made an offer to sign striker Wout Weghorst from Dutch side Heracles Almelo. Both clubs are said to be way apart in terms of valuation at this stage, but he certainly fits the bill as a like-for-like replacement for ex-Sunderland striker Jones. Two more strikers are said to be in negotiations to move to the club in January as well, in addition to Watt.
