Leeds winger rejects international call up to fight for his place in the team

Leeds United winger Jordan Botaka has rejected an international call up from DR Congo to feature in Friday’s friendly at Wycombe, the club have confirmed

Botaka, 22, is a new signing at Elland Road, having joined from Dutch side Excelsior on deadline day.

He has made six appearances in the Championship so far this season and his exciting style of play and speed has meant that he has quickly gained respect and admiration from Leeds supporters.

However, he has been limited to cameo appearances in recent weeks, but this decision is a show of his commitment to work his way into Steve Evans plans and earn starts for The Whites.

Botaka decided to stay at Thorp Arch as he wants to be involved in everything the coaching staff do. New Leeds boss Steve Evans confirmed that Botaka would be in the squad for Fridays friendly at Wycombe Wanderers, which Leeds are using to get match action in the international break.

It is thought that the DR Congo manager, Florent Ibenge was understanding of Botaka’s request, so sanctioned it.

Leeds have had a chaotic start to the season, with Massimo Cellino replacing Uwe Rosler with new boss Steve Evans.

There are also rumours that Cellino is ready to sell the club and will listen to interested parties, which could lead to major changes at Elland Road.

The club currently lie in 15th place in The Championship, after a 3-0 win at West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town last time out.
