£225,000 the target! Newport supporters hoping for club takeover

Fans of Newport County AFC will need to raise £225,000 in order for the club’s trust to take over control of the League Two club.

News broke in a meeting organised by the trust at the Riverfront Theatre to announce publicly the financial problems the side face, and to find a solution to restore financial security. The figure is made up of debt from the following seasons, and the club are hoping that supporters of the club can help contribute to the club.

County have had debt issues from the beginning of last year and a figure given in the meeting argues that previous owner Les Scadding, who earlier resigned as chairman and owner of County, had invested over £1.7 million in order to pay off debts.

Since news broke of the trust’s interest to takeover the Exiles’ membership has jumped to over 1200, yet the club are hoping for that figure to reach 3000 in order to hit the target.

So with such a big target for Newport fans it would appear a long and difficult journey faces the Trust, yet County are a club founded on support of its’ fans. The original side went bust in the late 1980’s and after 25 years of rebuilding the structure of the club County regained their Football League status in 2013.

After Terry Butcher became manager at the end of last season, the experience manager was forced to cut the large wage bill meaning 11 first team players were released. A new squad has emerged and the lack of wage funds means Butcher has relied on his younger players. County are yet to record a league win, and sit in the relegation zone exactly where bookmakers expect them to finish. Yet with improving performances and the team starting to blend a run of home fixtures may go in County’s favour.

As a supporter myself, and a fellow football enthusiast I am eager to help keep my club alive. I urgently ask for your support to join our trust or donate to us using the link below and help bring about financial security to my team. Thanks for your support!
