OPINION: Opportunities knock for Leeds fringe players in Rovers match

It is onwards to Doncaster on Thursday night for a tasty looking Yorkshire Derby and one that is sure to be good opportunity for Uwe Rosler to field some players that are the fringes of the first team.

Thursday night will welcome the biggest game of the season for Doncaster Rovers and one that is sure to be their cup final. After all, this is a town that achieved their biggest result in their history when they managed to defeat the Whites in the League One Play-Off Final in 2008 and achieve a promotion that only came about due to the fifteen point deduction that the Whites suffered.

Face it, this is a town that can’t help but be obsessed with Leeds United and a victory surely would be another landmark in the club’s history. Forget the fanfare regarding the One Direction singer Louie Tomlinson playing for the club. The real star attraction and showbiz for the club is the visit of Leeds United and one where people can’t help and wonder how many months of preparation went into this game. There is no doubt that it will a sell out and one where the majority of fans will be mostly supporters of the Whites but that shouldn’t disrupt them from the real issue of the game, the starting eleven.

Come Thursday night, Uwe Rosler should be looking to field some players that are on the fringes of the first time and one name that may come to mind may be the debut of the summer signing from Motherwell Lee Erwin, who will be looking to follow in the footsteps of past Scottish legends at the club. Despite playing in the U21s, it may still be a chance for the young Scottish striker to experience his first outing in a White shirt and a blood and thunder of Yorkshire derby is a good starting point. It will be eager to see who he will line up with and the most likely person should be Mirco Antenucci, who came off the bench and produced arguably the first real goal of the season contender last Saturday.

Another interesting debate will be whether to field Kelvin Phillips and give him the chance to experience the derby and as a fan it would be so pleasing to see another young local lad from the Thorp Arch Academy run rings round a local rival. There is also the opportunity to bring Luke Murphy up to speed and improve his fitness although much depends on whether it will come too soon. Considering that he played in the U21s.

Lastly, it will be another opportunity for Leeds to take the field in front of the Sky cameras and one which is the second of four live viewings on Sky just for August alone. What ever happened to Leeds United not being famous anymore? Sky might as well be a Leeds channel as they and Rupert Murdoch clearly like the club’s company.
