Rotherham United have today confirmed the signing of Peterborough United winger, Joe Newell, subject to a medical, reports the club’s official website.

Newell was given permission to train with the Millers after the clubs came close to reaching an agreement, and the winger impressed during pre-season friendlies.

Manager, Steve Evans, spoke to the official website of his delight at finally landing the 22-year-old.

“It may have taken us the best part of four weeks to come to an agreement with Peterborough United to secure the transfer of young Joe Newell, but I am delighted with the deal.

“Towards the end of last week both clubs were very close to an agreement and this gave comfort for Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony to sanction the lad spending some time with us, which in turn allowed the fine detail between both clubs to be agreed.

“This young man has considerable experience in the Championship for one being so young and is comfortable in any position on the left hand side of the pitch, and indeed centrally. Last season he was outstanding and I am led to believe he swept the boards for every Peterborough United player of the year award that was on offer.

“Today we have signed another young player to add to those already recruited and for me they blend fantastically well with the experienced lads we have brought together.”

Newell, a product of Peterborough United’s youth team, made 109 appearances for the club, despite only being 22-years-old.

The new Millers man also picked up The Posh’s player of the year award for last season.
