MK Dons closing in on Southampton’s Sam Gallagher

Milton Keynes Dons are set to embark on their debut campaign in the Championship but are currently lacking the goal scoring threat that they had throughout their promotion campaign last season.

The Dons were fortunate with their loan deals as they had both Benik Afobe and Will Grigg play for them and combine for 40 goals in all competitions.

Afobe left the Dons to join Wolves on a permanent deal in January and Grigg has recently joined relegated Wigan Athletic in a deal reportedly worth £1 million.

The Dons currently only have Dean Bowditch and Simon Church as fully recognised strikers and are in desperate need of new signings to give them a boost next season.

Sam Gallagher reportedly might be that player.

Gallagher, 19, is currently on the books of Premier League club Southampton and is reportedly set to join the Dons on a season-long loan.

Gallagher has made 18 league appearances for Southampton and has scored one Premier League goal in that time.

Southampton’s Dutch manager, Ronald Koeman, reportedly believes Gallagher has the potential to break into the Southampton team once he has earned more first-team football.

If Gallagher is able to find the back of the net regularly for the Dons, he could have a number of suitors around the country and find himself leaving Southampton permanently with the lure of regular football being too great.

Gallagher is an England under 19s player, having originally played for Scotland at the same level, and would at the very least give the Dons more depth up front.

Other reports suggest the Dons are looking at signing Atdhe Nuhiu from Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal, but with the Dons’ limited transfer budget this season it appears that Gallagher is more likely to be on his way to MK1.

Gallagher turns 20 in September and will no doubt look to learn as much as he can, should he join the Dons, and could potentially lead the Dons alongside Bowditch or Church up front next season.

One thing is for sure: the Dons must sign more strikers if they have a real hope of surviving in the Championship next season.
