FA refuse work permit for Rodolph Austin’s move to Sheffield Wednesday

Former Leeds United captain Rodolph Austin’s move to Sheffield Wednesday has collapsed, after the FA refused to give the Jamaican a work permit, reports Kicca.com.

Following his release from Leeds this summer, Austin found himself looking for a new club and reportedly attracted the interest of Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday decided to offer the 30-year-old, who captained Jamaica to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final last week, a contract for the upcoming season. Austin however, failed to meet the tough new criteria put in place by the FA to restrict the number of overseas players in England, despite playing in England for the last three years.

Austin’s agent, Darryl Powell, said that “Rudy has spent the summer playing in the Copa America and then helping Jamaica get to the Gold Cup final. He has proved himself as a genuine top Championship performer, there were six big clubs who wanted to sign him.

“But we found out yesterday that the new rules mean they won’t allow him a new work permit, which has been a big disappointment.

“His son was born here, Rudy only had two years to stay before he qualified for citizenship and he really wanted to stay and make a life in Britain.”

Austin made 112 appearances during his time at The Whites, scoring 10 goals and helping out with 5 assists.

Following this setback, Kicca are reporting that Austin will now consider offers from Turkey and the MLS as he looks to continue his footballing career.
