Former Leeds United and Blackpool man nips out for Indian takeaway

Although current reports cannot determine whether it was a madras or a korma, ex-Leeds United defender Darren O’Dea has signed for Mumbai City who play in India’s Super League.

Irishman O’Dea, who played for Leeds United during the 2011/12 Championship season on loan from Celtic, is expected to sign a contract today to play for Nicolas Anelka’s Mumbai side for the four-month Indian Super League (ISL) season. However, the 28-year-old will be back in Scotland to look for another club in December, when the ISL season finishes. O’Dea, quoted by the BBC, says,

“I have spoken to 20 to 30 teams, but my little girl starts school this year and we’re settled up in Scotland. So moving would have been a big decision. It is actually only a four-month league, so I’ll go there and, although they’ll probably visit once or twice, it will leave them settled. Then, come Christmas, we will wait and see what I will do.”

It is fair to say that O’Dea didn’t have the greatest of seasons in the colours of Leeds United. The Irishman was last seen in English football playing for Blackpool after signing for the troubled seaside club in December 2014 from Ukrainian side Metalurh Donetsk on a free transfer. Despite playing 20 times, he was unable to arrest Blackpool’s slide towards League One and the Tangerines were eventually relegated to the third tier of English football.
