National Geographic: 5 Football League Players Representing Tiny Nations

1.)

During the past four seasons, the talented young Walsall winger has featured first at u-23 level for the tiny Caribbean nation, and more recently, in the senior side. Though the national side – nicknamed The Sugar Boyz, in homage to the country’s major export – play several thousand miles from Sawyers’ birthplace of Birmingham, his decision to represent his ancestral homeland has paid dividends. A vital goal against Anguilla in the 2012 Caribbean Cup, and a midfield masterclass against the Turks and Caicos Islands in a World Cup Qualifier in March 2015 have been two particular highlights.

2.)

Name: Scott Wiseman
Club: Scunthorpe United
National Team: Gibraltar (Apps: 6, Goals 0) (pop. 30,000)

Right now, Gibraltar must just be happy to be involved. It’s been a long struggle for the minute principality to get UEFA accreditation; having been denied as far back as 1999, due to Spanish hostility. Whilst the Gibraltarians competitive fixtures have been a case of damage limitation, they are showing signs of improvement, having kept World Champions Germany to a respectable 4-0 scoreline in the autumn. The skilled, reliable Wiseman is one of the few professional footballers representing the Rock, and is undeniably one of the squad’s key members.

3.)

Name: Nahki Wells
Club: Huddersfield Town
National Team: Bermuda (Apps: 9, Goals 5) (pop. 64,000)

An idyllic cluster of islands drifting off North America’s east coast, Bermuda is more synonymous with relaxing beach breaks than football fervour. However, the Gombey Warriors, as the national team are affectionately known, are a source of national pride and frequently defeat nations far bigger than this diminutive British overseas territory. In recent years, a good deal of that success has been thanks to Terriers forward Nahki Wells. The pacy front-man struck twice in a recent 3-0 triumph over the Bahamas, bringing his goal tally to better than 1 every 2 games. Not bad at all!
