Tony Mowbray appointed Coventry City manager on a 2-year deal

Coventry City have this evening announced that the club has agreed terms with Tony Mowbray for him to become the Sky Blues next permanent manager after putting pen to paper on a 2 year deal with the League 1 Club.

Mowbray first arrived at Coventry in March on a short term deal with the club that ran until the end of last season, where under the guidance of the  former Celtic and Middlesbrough boss, Coventry survived relegation to League 2 on the final day of the season with a 2-1 victory away to Crawley Town: relegating the West Sussex club as a result.

Since the seasons end, Mowbray has been locked in crunch talks with Coventry City’s owners Sisu after making clear to the club following the end of last seasons campaign that unless certain guarantees were given to him in those meetings, he would not be extending his time with the West Midlands club, as reported by the72.co.uk

During his short time in the Sky Blue hotseat, Mowbray had repeatedly bemoaned the lack of scouting system in place at the club and called on Joy Seppala, owner of Sisu and Coventry City Football Club to provide him with a sufficient playing budget for next season in order for Coventry to be competitive at the right end of the League 1 table next season.

Since the end of last week, it was fully expected that Mowbray had been given the assurances he was looking for, however City supporters were made to sweat on waiting for an official announcement of Mowbray’s appointment throughout the weekend, with personal terms and final discussions regarding the clubs infrastructure being completed this afternoon at the club’s training ground.

Chief Executive of Coventry City Football Club, Steve Waggott told the club’s official website:

“We’re absolutely delighted that Tony has signed a long-term contract with the club.”

“We’ve worked on a lot of details with Tony and, over the coming days, we hope we can announce further changes in terms of the club’s infrastructure. That will mean there is a better structure at Coventry City for Tony to achieve his, and all of our, future aims and ambitions.”

Coventry supporters have this evening took to Social Media expressing their delight and relief over the appointment of Tony Mowbray as the Sky Blues next permanent manager:

Coventry City supporters will be hoping that tonight’s news is the first step on a long road to recovery for the League 1 club, with Mowbray being given all the support he needs to see the Sky Blues competing for promotion next season.
