This week news has emerged that Chris Kirkland’s time at Sheffield Wednesday may be coming to an end, Kirkland has been cast in Kieren Westwood’s shadow this season and has struggled to find any game-time. This is where Shrewsbury come into it, it is no surprise that Town’s star keeper is attracting attention. Keeper Jayson Leutwiler has been dubbed the ‘clean-sheet king’ due to having maintained 25 clean sheets in 49 games. Leutwiler spent two years at Middlesbrough and made only three appearances, he moved to the Greenhous Meadow before the start of the 2014/2015 season and has become what of a hero. Leutwiler received publicity after the League Cup game against Chelsea where he kept the likes of Schurrle and Drogba out for the majority of the game.
It is unlikely manager Micky Mellon will part with his Swiss keeper, but if the Swiss keeper was persuaded then he would have to go for a hefty price tag; Leutwiler still has a year on his contract. Town do not have a abundance of talent in goal, except for the very promising Callum Burton who may not be ready for first-team action just yet. Leutwiler is currently on holiday in Marbella with the whole squad so it is unlikely that transfer talks are on his mind at this moment in time. Mellon also has a difficult task on his hands to hold onto talented duo Connor Goldson and Ryan Woods, so he will not take kindly to this new piece of speculation. Throughout the season Leutwiler has looked more than comfortable at the club, coming across as a key figure in that changing room it would really affect the morale of the squad if the big man departed this summer.
Leutwiler may not be interested in the move at all, but if he was, it is likely he would have to play second fiddle to experienced keeper Kieren Westwood. It is unlikely we will see the Swiss keeper move on this summer due to a manager who is determined to have a strong squad for the 2015/2016 campaign.
