Watford promoted to Premier League

Watford have achieved promotion to the Barclays Premier League after results went their way, following their 2-0 triumph over Brighton at the AMEX Stadium.

The Hornets came into the penultimate weekend of the football league season knowing if they won their lunch time fixture, Middlesbrough lost, and Norwich failed to win, they would be promoted with one game to spare.

Troy Deeney notched his 21st of the campaign and Matty Vydra scored in stoppage time at the end of the game to ensure victory and put the pressure on Boro and Norwich.

Middlesbrough travelled to already safe Fulham whilst Norwich faced a tricky tie at relegation threatened Rotherham, following the Miller’s three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

Lewis Grabban was sent off for Norwich in the first half of their game because of a punch he directed towards Craig Morgan.

Fulham then took the lead against Middlesbrough in first half stoppage time thanks to Norwich loanee Michael Turner’s goal from a corner routine.

Ross McCormack doubled Fulham’s lead early in the second half when he converted a penalty after Daniel Ayala’s foul on McCormack.

Meanwhile, at The New York Stadium, ten-man Norwich took the lead thanks to a sublime strike from Gary Hooper.

Back at Craven Cottage, Adam Reach’s goal for Middlesbrough was cancelled out by a second McCormack penalty which Resulted in Boro left back George Friend being sent off.

2 quick fire goals from Spanish duo, Ayala and Kike levelled the score at Craven Cottage to 3-3 as Middlesbrough pressed for all three points to keep their hopes of automatic promotion alive.

However, late goals from Rotherham’s Jordan Bowery and an injury time counter attacking goal from McCormack to complete his hat trick, extinguished either Norwich or Middlesbrough’s chances of breaking into the top two before Bournemouth’s clash with Bolton on Monday night.

It meant that Watford returned to the Premiership after an 8 year exile, the Golden Boys have the chance to be crowned champions at home to Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday to top off a terrific campaign, and I for one, am delighted about that.
