Austin in-out or will he shake it all about?

With Rodolph Austin, Leeds’ Jamaican midfield enforcer, out of contract at the season’s end, one question remains hanging on the lips of Leeds United fans. That question is a simple one to ask, but like anything up Elland Road way the answer isn’t correspondingly simple. Fans are divided, you’d expect that from a club divided on so many lines: some say “in”, some say “out” – it is the Leeds United hokey-cokey after all. I don’t know who plays the music, nobody does; that’s why we dance to a different tune. However, Adam Pope, the Radio Leeds commentator quotes from a press conference with Leeds United’s head coach Neil Redfearn saying that he [Redfearn] is definitely an “in” man.

I’m an “in” man too. I’ve always had a soft spot for the hard-tacking, wild-shooting signing from SK Brann. Last season in a pretty weak Leeds team he was one of the league’s best/strongest defensive midfielders. This season, although he hasn’t played anything near a full complement of games, Rodolph Austin is still delivering enough to suggest that he will be worth an extension to his soon-to-end current contract. Austin has been particularly effective in tackle situations making 69 tackles from 85 events for 81.2% success rate. He has also been credited with providing the vroom in the midfield engine room, often getting the team on the front foot with his energetic running.

When the contract decisions and the retained list comes around this summer, will Rodolph Austin have done enough to have pushed himself into contention for retention and an extension? Only time will tell…time and Mr Cellino perhaps.
