Leeds United – Young Guns to stare down the barrel?

With Lewis Cook still suffering from injury, with Rodolph Austin still suspended, is head coach Neil Redfearn going to throw caution to the four winds and spring a surprise selection. After admitting that the last few Leeds performances were ‘low key’ and lacking any real heart, Redfearn has hinted at a chance for several of Leeds’ other young-stars, both Academy and loaned, to step up before the end of the season. Under-21 regulars Chris Dawson, Adryan, Brian Montenegro and Dario Del Fabro were left out of the the U21 squad for the 1-1 draw with their Coventry City counterparts. This raised the ideal prospect, in the eyes of some Leeds United fans, that with nothing to really play for, with nothing at stake, that some of these players might see game time in the game tonight against Norwich.

For Adryan, it might be a touch of ‘Jim Bowen’ insomuch as “look at what you could have won” as his €3.2m signing fee is unlikely to be met with the limited game time he’s had…unless he suddenly turns all Adryan ‘AT9’ Tavares on us and starts slamming in ridiculous goals. In the case of Brian Montenegro, it might be a case of Leeds sussing out whether the nine goals at U21 level are worth splashing out on a fee for the Paraguayan. Del Fabro, this is an intriguing one as he has looked very assured and commanding in his appearances for the U21s, weighing in with a few goals too. Chris Dawson, well he’s a keeper any way that you look at it.

One thing that has made this thought even more intriguing is Redfearn’s admission that,

“The more of these young players I blood who get used to first-team football, the more they become part of the first-team squad next season and I think that is important. I would rather make the squad up with that type of player and players I know than don’t know.”

Intrigue up at Elland Road. Never. Well, maybe just this time.

Regulators…mount up.
