Deeney creates record as Waford go top

Troy Deeney became the first Watford player in their history to score 20 goals in three consecutive seasons as the Hornets stung Middlesbrough 2-0 in the Easter Monday early kick off in the Championship. Deeney scored his 20th goal of the season in the 37th minute when he tucked away a cross from Guedioura. This goal consolidates 2nd place in the race for the Championship’s golden boot and, with three consecutive 20-goal seasons, marks Troy Deeney out to be the most consistent goal threat outside of the Premier League.

Deeney was joined on the scoresheet by Odion Ighalo who continued the earlier season goalscoring streak with his 19th of the season, in a season where he has only played a bit-part to the Deeney-Vydra partnership. Ighalo’s 19 goals have come at the rate of a goal per 91 minutes.

With this 2-0 win, Watford claimed top spot in the Championship and, in doing so, deposed Middlesbrough to 2nd spot pending the outcome of the Bournemouth vs Birmingham game.
