Tony Mowbray named Coventry City’s new manager untill the end of the season

Former Celtic and Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has this afternoon been appointed Coventry City manager until the end of the season with a view to a more permanent deal in the summer.

Mowbray replaces Steven Pressley who was sacked just over a week ago after a run of 7 league games without a win and depending on whether Coventry can retain their League 1 status in the final 13 games of the season, it is expected that the experienced boss will be given a longer-term deal at the end of the current campaign.

Mowbray is the Sky Blues 12th manager in just 14 years since the club was relegated from the Premier League in 2001 and was last in management for Middlesbrough, the club he made over 340 appearances for over a 9 year period, where he lasted just short of 3 years before being relieved of his duties after a disappointing run of 2 wins in his final 12 matches as manager.

Chief Executive Steve Waggott told the Coventry Telegraph;

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Tony Mowbray to Coventry City as our new manager. We’ve secured the services of a highly-rated, experienced candidate for the job and Tony is a manager who has enjoyed plenty of success at a higher level. We wanted someone who could come in and hit the ground running because we have 14 important games left in this season and the number one priority is to preserve our League One status.”

“We have agreed terms until the end of the season and then, immediately after the final ball is kicked, we can reassess and look at a longer term deal.”

Interim manager Neil MacFarlane and U21 coach Dave Hockaday will remain in charge for the Sky Blues trip to Barnsley tonight with Mowbray looking on from the stands, ready to take charge of the first team immediately after the final whistle. Coventry will be buoyed by the news of Mowbray’s arrival coming into the Barnsley game, hoping to build on the crucial 3 points secured over the weekend after a 2-1 victory at The Ricoh Arena against second in the table MK Dons on Saturday.

Coventry fans have took to social media, with the vast majority surprised and excited by the appointment of such an experienced coach.

It will be hoped that Tony Mowbray can hit the ground running for City who are looking desperately for a consistent run of results in order to push them up the table and away from the relegation places after dropping into the bottom 4 last week which ultimately led to Steven Pressley’s departure from the club.

Mowbray will be welcomed by Coventry supporters, hoping that his experience can rally the players in the final 13 matches of the season. It will also be hoped that Mowbray will be given a longer-term deal in the summer with City’s league 1 status secured with assurances from the much-maligned clubs owners, Sisu, who have been fervently criticised by supporters for seriously under-funding Steven Pressley during his time at the club. It will be hoped that Mowbray will be sufficiently backed by Sisu in order for him to build a winning team around his well-known attacking footballing philosophy next season.
