Yeovil Town 1-0 Peterborough United – Player Ratings

Yeovil Town recorded their first home win since March and in some style against high flying Peterborough United. It was a dominant performance and one in which Glovers fans may have thought it was not going to be their day. Kieffer Moore, Aaron Martin and AJ Leitch -Smith all missed good chances as well as Marcus Maddison hitting the post for the visitors. It took until the 88th minute, but the goal was certainly worth the wait. Joel Grant latched on to Leitch-Smith’s pass and ran past three Posh defenders before coolly slotting home sending the Huish Park crowd in to delirium. In truth, Posh were second best all day and struggled to cope with Yeovil’s quick free flowing football. They had looked to secure a point having not played well but one moment of brilliance separated the two teams. League 1 continues to surprise as Posh suffered their second defeat in a row, whilst the Glovers have lost just one of the last seven.

Yeovil Town

Jake Kean – Did not have an awful lot to do, but was commanding in his area and dealt with crosses well. Good communication with his back four and strong distribution. 8
Seth Nana – Twumasi – Impressive showing from the right back, pushed forward and made great runs. Tracked back well and was at the heart of the attacking play. 8.5
Aaron Martin – Was strong in the air and did not miss a header. Was beaten by the pace of Marcus Maddison but otherwise had a strong game. 7.5
Ben Nugent – Had a superb game, was not going to be beaten in the air and dealt with Peterborough’s front two with ease. Decision making was spot on and assisted Martin when he was out paced. 9
Nathan Smith – Much improved performance from the attacking left back with his tackling spot on. Put in some accurate crosses and was smart in his play in injury time to secure the win. 8
Joel Grant – Was at the heart of all Yeovil Town’s attacks and scored an excellent individual goal which proved to be the winner. His return from injury looks to be a welcome one. 9
Jack Price – Strong and creative in the centre. Linked up well with Joe Edwards and had good vision to play in Leitch – Smith a couple of times. 8
Joe Edwards –  Captained an impressive side and was strong both with and without the ball. Struck a long range shot just wide and was defensively sound when needed. 8.5
Nathan Ralph – Was commanding in his position and oozed creativity and perfect tackling. Ran with the ball well and released to strikers when necessary. Sound decision making and quick on the break. 8.5
AJ Leitch – Smith – Worked tirelessly and did not stop running. Was unlucky to see a couple of shots deflected. Provided the crucial pass for Grant to slot home. 8
Kieffer Moore – The tall striker made a nuisance of himself and was difficult to defend against. His most dangerous header was well saved but again worked hard. 7.5

Kevin Dawson –  Was on for a minute to make way for goal scorer Grant, so was unable to do anything wrong or make an impact. 8

Peterborough United

Ben Alnwick – Saved well from Kieffer Moore’s header and dealt with crosses very well. Could do nothing about the goal. A solid performance. 8
Ricardo Santos – Struggled to cope with Nathan Ralph’s speed and sometimes went in a bit hard to compensate. A tough game for him as Posh spent the second half defending. 6
Jack Baldwin – Not his strongest game, will be disappointed as he crucially slipped to allow Kieffer Moore clean through and had his goalkeeper to thank for avoiding the blushes. 5
Gabriel Zakuani – A return to the starting line up and was solid enough. AJ Leitch Smith struggled with him at first but beat him when dribbling with the ball second half. 6.5
Michael Smith – Had a tough game against a relentless Joel Grant. Struggled to keep up with Grant and allowed him to dictate the play. 5
Kenneth McAvoy – Had a shot well saved by Kean, but struggled to gain any momentum in the match. 6.5
Jack Payne – Probably Peterborough’s most impressive player in terms of passing football. Had good vision but not enough support in the final third. 7
Jermaine Anderson – Clearly a talented individual but was outclassed by Joe Edwards and struggled with the pace of Yeovil’s play. 5.5
Joe Newell – Was not particularly impressive. Went missing throughout the game but put in one perfect cross which was headed behind for a corner. Lucky for the home side as it was a quality ball. 6.5
Kyle Vassell – Worked hard but struggled to latch on to any meaningful chances. 5
Marcus Maddison – Easily Peterborough’s biggest threat. His shot from 20 yards hit the cross bar and bounced on to the line. On another day he would have scored. However, he let himself down with a lot of simulation due to frustration. 7

Luke James – Worked hard and was extremely quick but did not prompt Kean to make a meaningful save. 6.5
Grant McCann – His ten minutes were unmemorable but worked hard for the team as they looked to try and contain Yeovil. 6.5

Man of the Match

Joel Grant – Scored a phenomenal goal after a tireless performance which oozed creativity and quality. One to watch for the rest of the season.  9
