Loovens to captain Owls next season

Dutch central defender Glenn Loovens recently penned a new one year deal with Sheffield Wednesday, after enjoying a successful stint at Hillsborough last term. Loovens’ signing was confirmed on Sunday at The Owls’ community fun day, and it has been revealed that the 30 year-old will wear the captain’s armband for Stuart Gray’s men next season.

The former Netherlands international initially agreed a short term contract in November 2013 that ensured that he would spend the remainder of the 2013/14 season as a Sheffield Wednesday player. Loovens deputised in the first game of Gray’s tenure, a 2-1 win over eventual champions Leicester City. He marked his first game in the blue and white stripes with a steady performance, and he built on this display by producing plenty of fine performances in the first few months of 2014, which prompted Gray to reward the ex-Celtic defender with a new 12-month contract. Standing relatively tall at 6’2, Loovens combines aerial strength with the ability to read the game very well, making him a popular figure at Hillsborough.

Wednesday’s latest recruit has spent time at Feyenoord, Cardiff, Real Zaragoza and perhaps most notably Celtic, who paid £2.1 million for his services in 2008. He scored 9 goals in 89 appearances whilst representing the Glaswegians. Loovens is expected to feature in the Owls’ friendly against Bury this Friday, at the AJ Bell Stadium, home of Rugby League side Salford City Reds.

Who will partner the skipper next season remains to be seen, Gray currently has limited options there at his disposal; Kamil Zayatte, the only other senior centre-half in the squad, will have to improve after a enduring a dismal debut season. In terms of incomings, Wolves defender Roger Johnson has been linked with a return to S6 following a loan spell there last campaign, but it isn’t understood that the parties are in talks just yet.
