Championship Weekend Preview

Leicester City v Doncaster Rovers

The Championship league winners Leicester will be in a party mood and in the process could send Doncaster straight back down into league to if results go against the Vikings.

4357713_1967391aThis season has truly been out of this world for Leicester. Top of the league since Christmas, the Foxes have been relentless in their pursuit of the promised land losing just 1 game since the 7th December. The signing of Riyad Mahrez only strengthened their grip on top spot and plans are already being made for their first season back in the Premier League since 2004. The players are set for an open top bus tour of the city on Monday, but focus will be firmly on the task of closing out the season with a win in front of a packed out King Power stadium. Kevin Phillips announced his retirement after a great career spanning 20 years and 9 clubs. The veteran will be hoping to got out in style with a goal in his final game and is this game’s key man.

Doncaster arguably have the toughest task of all the teams fighting to avoid relegation on the final day. Just 1 point from their last 6 games has seen them fall from what looked like safety to the cusp of the relegation zone. Doncaster do not necessarily need a victory on the final day to stay up, but with Birmingham facing Bolton in a very winnable game the pressure really is on the Vikings to ensure they do not return to League 1 after just 1 season back in the Championship. Conceding goals has been the issue for Doncaster of late, leaking 12 in their last 6 games and with a trip to the league’s 2nd top scorers it is going to be a nervous day in the stands at the King Power.
