Championship Weekend Preview

Birmingham v Leeds – The Blues need a win, McDermott wants one

This game will in some way throw the form book out of the window. Birmingham have not won at St Andrews since 1st October, whilst Leeds have won just once in their last 8 away games.

Charlton-v-Birmingham-Federico-Macheda-pa_3080429It is dark times at St Andrews. Birmingham have slumped to 21st in the table only outside the relegation zone on goal difference. 5 defeats in their last 6 has seen teams leapfrog them in the table and fans to lose patience with boss Lee Clark. Trailing 4-0 at half-time to Blackburn on Monday was nothing short of a disaster and this was not the first time this had happened. The Blues still have 3 games to play with Wigan visiting the Midlands on Tuesday, but that will do little to boost hte spirit in the Birmingham camp. Paul Robinson sent out a damning message this week claiming the current group of loan players have let the club down. One of those players, Federico Macheda, will probably be surprised by these comments. The striker has netted 9 goals from 9 starts and 6 substitute appearances. Macheda is this game’s key man.

Back-to-back wins since the takeover of Massimo Cellino came to a halt with a thump on Monday when Leeds were played off the park by Nottingham Forest in the tea-time kick off. Trailing within the opening minutes set the tone for the afternoon and it was not pleasant. Brian McDermott will know of Cellino’s ruthless streak and if they fail to improve the performance in the final two games of the season he could well be sent packing from Elland Road. The same goes for the players, who at times this year have been nothing short of appaling in both their professionalism and application. Expect a summer exodus with a revamped squad at Elland Road come August.  Without Ross McCormack’s goals Leeds would sit rock-bottom of the Championship. The Scot needs just 1 more goal to make 30  for the season and expect him to find the net against Birmingham.

Score prediction: 1-1 draw
