West Yorkshire Round Up

Last weekend’s action saw one win, one draw, and one defeat for the three West Yorkshire sides, with Leeds United picking up all three points, Bradford City grabbing a well-earned point, and Huddersfield Town losing after taking the lead.

Leeds United beat struggling Blackpool 2-0 at Elland Road, thanks to a Luke Murphy brace. Blackpool player-manager Barry Ferguson played himself, as the Tangerines searched desperately for a win. It was Murphy who opened the scoring on 21 minutes, after Ross McCormack’s pass found the summer signing, who finished well from close range. Blackpool had a couple of glorious chances to equalise, but neither Neal Bishop, nor David Goodwillie, could finish. Murphy put the game beyond doubt on 73 minutes, when his chip over Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks found the back of the net. Victory for Leeds sees them sit 10 points above the relegation spots, and they can now look towards next season.

Bradford City picked up a point at high-flying Rotherham United, in a 0-0 draw. Bradford switched to a 4-5-1 formation, in an attempt to try frustrate the hosts, and it worked, with Rotherham, the second highest scorers in League One, reduced to only 4 shots on target. Jon Stead had the best chance for the visitors, when his volley went over the bar from 12 yards out. Michael O’Connor hit the post in the second half, and Kari Arnason put a free header over the bar in the dying minutes, resulting in the game finishing goalless, a result that pleased the vocal travelling support. A draw for City sees them sit 12th in the League One table, and they have now reached the 50 point mark.

Huddersfield Town could not capitalise on a good start, as they went down 3-1 at Derby County. Nahki Wells opened the scoring for Town on 14 minutes, when he scored a tap-in following Danny Ward’s cross, but County got back into the game on 28 minutes when Johnny Russell’s chip beat Alex Smithies. Joel Lynch was sent off for the visitors just before half-time, for a second bookable offence, and things went from bad to worse after the restart, when Alex Smithies’ comical own goal put Derby ahead. Craig Forsyth’s cross was misjudged horribly by the goalkeeper, who fumbled it into his own net. Derby went 3-1 up on 57 minutes, through a Chris Martin penalty, after Will Hughes was fouled in the area, a challenge that saw Peter Clarke sent off. 3-1 was how the game finished, and Huddersfield’s abysmal form has seen them drop to 17th, 6 points above the relegation spots.
