5 Fallen Giants

4. Peterborough United

George-BoydAlthough the Posh do not have the best of footballing records, Peterborough have had some better times in football, especially in division one and division two. As a team, they never capitalised on playing in the top flight, but have made quite a name for themselves in the Championship and in League One.

Posh have been in the second and third tier of English football many times, and have acquired a number of good players during that period. One of those players was Darren Ferguson (Son of Sir Alex) who joined for Posh as their player manager in 2007 when they were sitting down in League Two.

Ferguson helped the club to a 10th place finish when he joined in January 2007. However, in his first full season, he led Peterborough to 2nd place in the League Two table, enough to gain them automatic promotion that year. Then, in the 2008-09 season, his managerial talent got his side another automatic promotion place, this time finishing second in League One. But, Ferguson left by mutual consent in the following season when Posh were sitting at the bottom of the table.

His successor Mark Cooper also left the club, but only after 13 games. Cooper’s replacement, Jim Gannon got the axe from the board after relegation from the Championship was confirmed. Gary Johnson then stepped up to the plate, but left in January 2011 over a policy altercation. It was then that former manager Ferguson took the reins again. After his second season back in charge of the club, Peterborough got relegated from the Championship again and now find themselves sitting just inside the League One play off positions.
