4 things we learned about League 2 this weekend

Chris Hargreaves looks like the right man for Torquay

Sitting 23rd in League 2, and without a win in four games, Chris Hargreaves must have feared his first assignment in charge of Torquay United; an away trip to Wimbledon. Despite the huge task ahead, which Hargreaves acknowledged when he was introduced the media earlier in the week, Torquay pulled off a shock 2-0 win which put them just three points off 17th place. With the form of the teams just above Torquay dipping, next weekend’s clash with Northampton is looking like it will be a very interesting affair.

The top three look unstoppable

With a few of the Play-Off contenders experiencing lean spells in terms of form, the top three of Scunthorpe, Burton and Chesterfield look unstoppable. Scunthorpe and Burton are unbeaten since mid-November whilst Chesterfield haven’t lost for more than a month, and the Spireites trounced Bury 4-0 yesterday. Scunthorpe have strengthened their squad considerably and look to be the favourites to win the league, whilst Burton and Chesterfield have the quality to continue their rich vein of form.

Plymouth could still reach the Play-Offs

After an inconsistent start to the season, Plymouth Argyle’s form has picked up in the last few months and they are unbeaten in five league matches. They drew yesterday to high-flying Southend and, impressively, sit fifth in the League 2 form table. Despite some tough games remaining in January, February looks like a month that will be kind to Plymouth and they should be able to continue their assault on the top seven.

Newport County fans will be elated

Accrington Stanley’s 88th minute goal, in yesterday’s match against Newport, appeared to have won Stanley the game, and condemned Newport to a third successive defeat. However, Lee Minshull grabbed a 90th minute equaliser to ensure that the two teams shared the points. Prior to Newport’s two defeats over the New Year period they were unbeaten in six and manager Justin Edinburgh will be keen to try and recover that form, as they look to get back into the top seven.
