5 things we learned about League 2 this weekend

Bristol Rovers are back on track

Without a win in nine, very little was expected of Bristol Rovers as they travelled to the Kassam Stadium to play Oxford United, who were sitting top of the table. However, 682 Rovers fans saw their team notch up their first away win of the season, thanks to a John-Joe O’Toole penalty after Jake Wright felled Eliot Richards. Goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall made a string of fine saves, as the Pirates recorded one of the shocks of the season.

Northampton are in real trouble

The Cobblers dreadful start to the season will have shocked many people, considering they were last season’s Play-Off finalists. They have only won two games all season – 3-1 against Newport and an impressive 2-0 away victory against Wimbledon – and have lost nine, more than anyone else in the division. They have made a nasty habit of conceding last minute goals this season – as proved in matches against York, Exeter and Rochdale – and they conceding another 90th minute goal today, against Plymouth, to lose 1-0. Things will have to change drastically if they want to climb the table.

Fleetwood look the real deal

Fleetwood found their top gear today with an extremely impressive 4-1 win over Newport County. A Steve Schumacher hat-trick inspired the Cod Army to the big win, and to the summit of League 2, and today’s victory followed up a solid 2-0 away win against York last weekend. With matches against the bottom two coming up in the next few weeks, Fleetwood will be confident to continue their stay at the top of the League.

Accrington shouldn’t be written off

Many expected Accrington to finish bottom at the start of the season but, whilst it is too early to say whether they will or won’t, they are not giving up without a fight. A late equaliser today against Wycombe lifted them off the bottom, and ensured they carried on an impressive run of form which has seen them beat Morecambe and Bristol Rovers. With confidence in the Stanley camp high, James Beattie and his players will be confidence of continuing this run with some important games approaching.

Chesterfield are struggling to turn it around

Despite a terrific start, in which Chesterfield looked like world-beaters, the Spireites have hit the rails in the last month or so. Their winless run stretched to seven games, after a late Luke Waterfall header denied them three points. It is not the first time this season Chesterfield have thrown away a lead and dropped points, most spectacularly when they threw away a three goal advantage against Morecambe to lose 4-3 last month. Chesterfield have returned to the top three with this draw, but unless they start picking up wins they are unlikely to stay there for much longer.
