The72 Football League Weekend Awards: Week 9

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Chesterfield 3-2 Sheffield United

A real local derby that seemed to have a little bit of everything as Chesterfield saw off a stubborn Sheffield United side that almost had another spectacular comeback. A great long-range drive from Jimmy Ryan gave the Spireites the lead before Michael Higdon saw red for a dangerous tackle on Dan Jones, who was either really hurt or selling like a 90’s wrestler.

Chesterfield stopper Tommy Lee then was shown a red card after bringing down Ryan Flynn but Gary Roberts would put the Derbyshire side two to the good before top scorer Eoin Doyle made it three. But the Blades would come back, which is almost the story of their season so far, with Mark McNulty and Neill Collins pulling two back in the final 10 minutes.

It was an enthralling early kick-off that really showed the quality of League One and that even though both team’s main rivals are in different divisions, you can still have a great derby game.
