Weekend Preview: The Championship

Cardiff v Sheffield Wednesday

It is time for a fresh start at Cardiff. If rumours are to be believed Russell Slade is set to be named the new boss of the Bluebirds. Wednesday will want to bounce back from the midweek action where they were dispatched 7-0 by Manchester City.

For Cardiff mid-table is not good enough this season, so to see them already looking for a new manager before the end of September after a far from roaring start to the season is not surprising. Slade left his post at Orient in midweek, but the move may be delayed as the Bluebirds and the O’s are in the midst of discussions over a compensation deal with Orient claiming that they turned down an approach from Cardiff for their boss. That means Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young will remain in charge and they will demand more from their players after being played off the park by Bournemouth in the cup in midweek. Last weekend the Bluebirds let a 2-0 slip to take a draw against Derby continuing a run of five league games without a win. Summer signings Adam le Fondre and Federico Macheda have failed to deliver so far this campaign and trying to cater around the in-form Kenwyne Jones has seen them occupy wide berths at times. The task for the new boss will be to find a way to get the best out of these three strikers who all know how to score at this level.

_77762979_burnleySheffield Wednesday may have been an early shock for many fans to see at the top end of the table, however once you take a look at the way they ended last season it seems they have just continued where they left off before the summer break. Just one defeat this season, which came against leaders Nottingham Forest, sees Wednesday sitting pretty in 6th spot just three points behind the pace setters. The less said about the midweek trip to the Premier League champions the better. A humbling experience for the Wednesday players who were level at half time. What followed will not be forgotten easily by the 5,400 fans who sang their hearts out from start to finish. Seven goals in the second half was some step up from City and Stuart Gray will be wary of letting that the defeat effect his squad. A line needs to be drawn in the sand and focus back on their recent league form of two wins and a draw in their last three as they enter a tricky run of fixtures. Atdhe Nuhiu is a big physical presence for Wednesday upfront and he has four goals to his name this season. The 6ft 6in Austrian has not scored in the league in over a month. He is this game’s key man.
