Weekend Preview: The Championship

Derby County v Cardiff City

Derby are slowly picking up the pace in their push for the top two, whilst Cardiff make the trip to the East Midlands with caretaker charge being handed to  Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young.

SOCCER ForestThe Rams come into this game on an unbeaten four game run which includes the 5-1 win over Fulham, the reasonable 1-1 draw with Ipswich, the hard thought draw in last weekend’s East Midlands derby with rivals Nottingham Forest and the midweek epic 3-2 win at Blackburn. In fact, so far this season Derby have lost just once, away at Charlton, and have not tasted defeat at the iPro since 8th March against Millwall. A run of nine Championship games. After a steady campaign last year for Derby, young starlet Will Hughes has stepped up his game in the early weeks of this season. The midfielder, who is a product of the clubs youth academy, scored in the win at Ewood Park on Wednesday and will be looking to add more goals to his game over the course of the season. Hughes is this game’s key man.

After a run of four games without a win including defeats against Wolves, Norwich and most recently Middlesbrough owner Vincent Tan relieved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his duties after just over nine months at the helm of the Welsh side. Tan has left management duties to current player Danny Gabbidon and former player and current first team coach Scott Young until he finds a suitable candidate to take the job on a permanent basis. Despite spending big in the summer the Bluebirds have failed to strike a winning formula after a disappointing season in the Premier League last term. They currently sit 17th with eight points to their name, although they are yet to win away this campaign and have not done so in a league game since 12th April at Southampton. Therefore if this game goes to form it must surely be a home win and Derby will be in a confident mood coming into the game against the manager-less Bluebirds.

Score prediction: 4-1 Derby win
