Southend 2-0 Portsmouth: Match report and player ratings

10705166_961670553846874_658561087_nSouthend, who hadn’t won in four previous league games, overcame Andy Awford’s men at Roots Hall this afternoon. The two teams went in level at the break but it was a good half, both sides sharing the chances. The two goals were scored in the second half, the first coming from Barry Corr being in the right place at the right time and heading in from two yards after 56 minutes played. This was before Spurs loanee and second half substitute Shaquille Coulthirst went round the Pompey defence and slotted home to ensure all three important points for the home side.

Southend United

Bentley- Didn’t really have too much to deal with throughout the game but was confident and stood his ground when he had to. 7.0
White- Coped well with the pressure from Pompey’s wing play and when called upon, did his job well. 7.5
Thompson- One of his best performances since joining the blues, was a rock in the heart of Southend’s defence and dealt with anything that came his way. 8.0
Williams- An excellent debut performance by the Crystal Palace youngster, looked extremely confident throughout the 90 minutes and did well going forward. 8.5
Prosser- Looked solid in the Southend back line, made good tackles when necessary but his balls dispatched could have been better. 7.5
Leonard- Not his greatest performance for Southend but still did his midfield role relatively well. Went on some great solo runs and created opportunities but was caught on the ball and have the ball away numerous times. 7.0
Payne- Very much last week had a great game, always seemed to be involved, winning the ball and creating chances. Didn’t get in the scoresheet this time but was a very influential player this afternoon. 8.5
Deegan- Only on a three month loan but if he plays like that every week, could be a key first team player for the blues. Was always involved and constantly winning the ball back and creating opportunities. Although he was booked and was fortunate not to be sent off, he had a terrific game. 9.0
Weston- Played at his best today, seemed to have a lot of energy throughout the match and looked a constant threat along the wing for Pompey. Set up a few chances and had a few insights on goal for himself. 8.0
Hurst- Didn’t get in the game as much as he would’ve liked to but he caused trouble along the wings at times but was caught on the ball on a few occasions. 7.5
Corr- Got on the scoresheet and overall had a decent game. Played the full 90 minutes and you could see he was tiring by the end but he was in the right place at the right time this afternoon which paid off. 7.5

Substitutions

Worrall- Came on for 15 minutes, got the ball a few times along the wing and looked to create chances and got himself into good positions. 6.5
Atkinson- Looked the most lively player once he came on, tracked back and won the ball back for Southend and looked good going forward. 7.0
Coulthirst- Only came on with 3 minutes left but he looked on point up front and caused a threat when he got the ball. He secured the 3 points for Southend by a brilliant solo goal. 7.5

 

Portsmouth

Jones- Looked a bit shaky but made a few decent saves from Southend attacks. 6.0
Wynter- Backed off Southend’s front line too much and gave them too much space and time along the wings. 5.0
Robinson- Had a steady game today and won most headers that came his way. 6.0
Whatmough- By far Pompey’s best player, looked very impressive, committed to every challenge and didn’t make it easy for danger man Barry Corr. 8.0
Shorey- Tried to attack down the wings quite a bit but didn’t really get anywhere. 6.0
Wallace- Pompey’s best player going forward this afternoon, caused Southend a few problems but unable to save Portsmouth. 7.0
Dunne- Won very little in midfield, allowing Southend to attack and break away on many occasions. 5.0
Hollands- Didn’t give a lot of support to the forwards, didn’t create any real chances. 6.0
Holmes- Deliveries and corner kicks into the box were poor and gave the ball away numerous times. 5.0
Storey- Had very little impact on the game, looked unfocused. 5.0
Westcarr- Wasn’t given a good service from the midfield throughout the game and failed to do much with the ball when given it. 6.0

Substitutions

Butler- Looked steady for a youngster coming n in this sort of game but failed to really get involved. 6.0
Agyemang- Threatened the Southend back lone when he came off the bench, maybe should have come on earlier as he looked the most likely to grab a goal. 7.0
Barcham- Had a few promising runs, tried to create chances but they failed to lead to anything. 6.5

 

Man of the Match

Gary Deegan- Was always involved in the game some how, tracked back and won the ball time and time again. Looked very comfortable in midfield and was always looking for opportunities and chances and played a massive role in Southend coming away victorious. 9.0
