5 things we learned about League 2 this weekend

Exeter have the bragging rights in Devon

Exeter City fans will be on cloud nine after they saw their team beat Plymouth 3-1 on Saturday, and jump into the automatic promotion places. A Luke Young free-kick drew Plymouth level on 69 minutes after Alan Gow had found Aaron Davies on 56 minutes to slot home. Gow then turned finisher in the 83rd minute, curling home the winner, before Scott Bennett finished from close range to wrap up the points. Exeter are now third whilst Plymouth are 17th.

Northampton Town CAN win away

Northampton’s 2-0 win over Wimbledon was Northampton’s first win in seven League 2 matches and, if you exclude the 1-0 win over Cheltenham in the Play-Offs, their first away win since 16th February, where they triumphed 2-1 over Southend. Goals from Lee Collins and Stuart Dallas are the clubs first away goals of the season, the defence secured their first away clean sheet and the dominance that the Cobblers enjoyed even led Aidy Boothroyd to say that the Cobblers could have scored more. Despite tough matches coming up, the Cobblers will be confident of building on this win and starting to climb the table.

Scunthorpe will be quietly confident

Scunthorpe United’s unbeaten run, since their 3-2 defeat away to Wimbledon, has gone unnoticed in many ways. They are not the most fashionable team in the world but they have slowly but surely climbed the table over the last six games and have been very solid in defence, only conceding a handful of goals. In their 2-0 win over Cheltenham they had lots of chances to score and defended resolutely and their current form will surely hold them in good stead as the season progresses.

Billy Kee is proving to be Burton’s main man

Billy Kee, who returned from a six week injury absence last weekend, has now scored three goals in two games for Burton. His close range finish against Scunthorpe last weekend inspired the Brewers to a 2-2 draw, which ended a run of three straight defeats and he scored a brace against Wycombe on Saturday to earn their first win since their 1-0 win over Accrington in August. Despite only playing five games so far this season, Kee is Burton’s top goalscorer and if his form continues, manager Gary Rowett will be hopeful of his team beginning to climb the table.

Has Chesterfield’s bubble burst?

After an incredible start, Chesterfield have struggled in their last two games as defeats to local rivals Mansfield and Morecambe have shown cracks in the Spireites team.  Against Mansfield, the stats suggest that Chesterfield dominated proceedings, whilst against Morecambe, Chesterfield were 3-0 up at half-time and imploded to allow Morecambe to execute a remarkable comeback. With key man Gary Roberts suspended and problems beginning to appear, Chesterfield will have to dig in over the next few weeks to ensure they get back on track.
