Fleetwood Town line up move for ex-Liverpool and Rangers defender

According to a report from The Sun (Paper edition, 7th June, Page 61), Fleetwood Town are eyeing up a swoop for out of contract Rangers defender Jon Flanagan.

Rangers announced that defender Jon Flanagan would be leaving the club at the end of his contract this summer. The former Liverpool defender has been out of favour at Ibrox but now, it has been reported that he may not be out of a club for long.

Former Rangers man Joey Barton – now in charge of Fleetwood Town – is said to be interested in bringing Flanagan to Highbury Stadium. Flanagan will be available on a free transfer with his deal up this summer and Barton is said to be ready to pounce.

Flanagan joined Rangers in the summer of 2018 at the end of his contract with Liverpool. In his time with the Scottish Premiership club, Flanagan has played in 39 games across all competitions, laying on one assist in the process. Injury problems have limited him to only 10 appearances across all competitions so far this season, including four Europa League qualifying games.

Flanagan – who can play at either left or right-back – notched up over 50 first-team appearances for Liverpool during his time with the club. He also spent stints out on loan with the likes of Burnley and Bolton Wanderers.

League One clubs like Fleetwood will have to be shrewd in their transfer business this summer. Budget cuts could see an increased amount of free transfers and Flanagan could prove to be a shrewd signing for the Cod Army.

It will be interesting to see if a move for Flanagan materialises for Barton and Fleetwood this summer. Fleetwood fans, would you like to see him join the club this summer?
