‘Some teams will possibly change’ – Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk on football return

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Garry Monk has told the Yorkshire Post that he expects teams to change their tactics when football returns.

The Sky Bet Championship season has been suspended since March due to the Coronavirus pandemic but the league has been working on a return since then. It appears that we will see the sport we love so much return in June with the Championship planning to play the remaining nine matchdays and play-offs behind closed doors.

There’s been a lot of discussion on what football will look like in the Corona era and now Wednesday boss Monk has had his say. He believes that because of the time teams have had to prepare for a return, training has stopped for longer than the gap between the end of the season and start of pre-season, a lot of sides will have different tactics and ways to play upon the return of the Championship.

Monk said: “In terms of analysis and planning for the teams you’re going to play, you still had to do that (in lockdown), although that’s another difficulty.

“Some teams will possibly change what they were doing and we will have no preparation for it – that’s the same for every club.”

When asked about if Wednesday could improve on their pre-lockdown form, which was so bad it had taken them out of play-off contention, Monk said: “You never know until you’re back playing games, but I think the one thing that is key – for footballers and managers – is that getting back to playing football after a break is always something you look forward to.

“You want to get back and try to change that form. We want to give ourselves the best chance.”
