James Chester provides update on Aston Villa contract situation

On-loan Stoke City defender James Chester has provided an update on his expiring Aston Villa contract in his column with The Athletic.

His current deal with the Villains is set to end this summer and despite returning to full fitness in recent months he has found himself down the pecking order at Villa Park.

Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels have both been preferred to Chester and with the arrival of Kourtney Hause and Ezri Konsa this has left Chester with limited first-team opportunities.

The 31-year-old joined Stoke in January and had featured in all but one of Stoke’s Championship games before the suspension of the season due to the Coronavirus.

There have been rumours that Stoke are willing to offer a permanent deal to Chester at the end of the current campaign and the defender has revealed that he will be looking to make a decision soon.

“My current contract at Aston Villa expires this summer and it is something I have thought of slightly but as we’re waiting on so many decisions, I haven’t really asked too many questions. I don’t think people at clubs will have any kind of answer for me.”

“I’ll put my mind to it when I have all the information in front of me. Maybe in the next few weeks.”

Chester has plenty of Championship and Premier League experience with West Bromwich Albion and would be a real coup for the Potters should they manage to sign someone of the calibre of Chester on a permanent deal.
