Danny Mills has identified one key factor which could give Leeds United the edge over both West Bromwich Albion and Fulham in the race for promotion an interview with Football Insider.
Mills believes that the impressive fitness of the Whites squad could give them an advantage over their rivals once the season resumes.
Former Leeds defender Mills also thinks that a ‘fully fit’ Jean-Kevin Augustin could be a major boost for the Yorkshire giants’ chances of automatic promotion.
There is still some uncertainty over when the season will resume but it is looking increasingly likely that it will do so following just two positive Coronavirus tests, both of which came from Hull City.
Mills gave his views on the fitness of Leeds saying: “If you have used this time wisely, you have got your base fitness to where it needs to be.”
“What else have players had to do in this time? It is their job. If they have been clever they have used this time wisely to their benefit.”
“The difference will be who can get up to speed quickest and who has looked after themselves the best over the lockdown period. That might just give Leeds the edge of being a week, ten days ahead of everybody else.”
There is no secret of the fact that manager Marcelo Bielsa is very specific in his training and fitness methods and will want to ensure his players are at the peak of their physical condition for the season resumption.
With over two months without league football and plenty left to play for, these remaining nine matches are sure to be significant for every club fighting for promotion and to escape relegation.
