Birmingham City opt against extending Swansea City winger’s loan deal

Birmingham city will not extend Jefferson Montero’s loan deal from Swansea City, as announced by their official club website.

The winger’s loan with the Blues expires at the end of June.

Birmingham have also announced that goalkeeper David Stockdale and defender Cheick Keita will both depart the club on free transfers this summer.

Montero, who is 30 years old, is also out of contract at Swansea next month and is likely to also become a free agent.

The pacey winger joined Birmingham on loan last summer and has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Pep Clotet’s side this season.

Montero has fallen out-of-favour at the Liberty Stadium and was shipped out on loan to West Brom for the second-half of last season.

The Ecuador international signed for Swansea when they were in the Premier League in 2014 from Mexican top flight side Morelia. He has since made 84 appearances for the Welsh outfit, as well as having loan spells away at Getafe and Emelec.

Montero has also previously had stints with the likes of Independiente del Valle, Dorados, Villarreal, Levante and Real Betis in the past.

The pacey winger will have to weigh up his next move this summer, like Stockdale and Keita, with a permanent move to Birmingham off the cards.

The Blues are the first Championship side to announce players who will not be offered deals this summer, with plenty more to follow suit over the coming weeks with contracts expiring at the end of June.
