Ex-Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy eyeing return to management

Mick McCarthy is eager to return to management, as per a report by the Daily Mail.

The experienced boss is available after parting company with the Republic of Ireland national team earlier this month.

McCarthy, who is 61 years old, has overseen just under 1,000 games as a manager, having previously spent his playing career with the likes of Barnsley, Manchester City, Celtic and Millwall.

His first job in the dugout was at Millwall and he has since gone onto manage Ireland twice, Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich. He has won promotion to the Premier League twice as a manager.

McCarthy’s spent six years in charge of Ipswich from 2012 and 2018 and was praised for the work he did with the Tractor Boys in the Championship on a tight budget.

He has admitted he wants to return to the game as soon as possible, as per the Daily Mail: “It is testing on your mind, on your energy, on your thought process, on your family. You ask any manager. They will be telling you the same. But I will also tell you now that I still love it.”

“The longer you are out the more you realise you relish it and thrive on it and need it. Doing nothing would be a real test for me. I need to be standing on that touchline and being at training every day and coaching and having that craic with the lads. The atmosphere that you create at a club is brilliant and that’s what you enjoy so much. It’s infectious.”

He added: “People tell me the game has changed and players have changed but have they? I don’t find the job any harder. I treat all the players well and with respect. Me and TC (his assistant, Terry Connor) coach and manage them. That’s it.”

McCarthy is a decent option for any Football League clubs needing a new manager this summer.
