Leeds United and West Brom get chance to earn promotion after FIFA big news

Life has been changed forever by the COVID-19 pandemic and the world is currently experiencing necessary lockdown to curb the spread of the virus that has passed 1 million confirmed cases. Social distancing has meant that all sporting meetings, competitions etc have been suspended. That led to much worry and uncertainty amongst many fans. However, The Athletic have good news on that front which will reassure Leeds United and West Brom fans in particular.

In an article co-written by Simon Hughes, Laurie Whitwell and Adam Crafton, The Athletic says that the right to earn promotion to the Premier League is well and truly back on the cards for the Whites and the Baggies.

Many fans had been worried that the top leagues in England would fold in their campaigns and declare their seasons null and void, results being expunged. Now though, Hughes et al state that “FIFA is to confirm an indefinite extension to the 2019-20 season across the globe, allowing each country’s football authority to determine when campaigns can finish.

That will be news that Leeds United fans, in particular, will find relieving in a suspended campaign that sees their side topping the table and with a seven-point gap to Fulham in 3rd with the Cottagers heading the playoff-chasing pack.

Alongside Leeds United fans breathing deep breaths, that will now shallow out, will be West Brom fans who have been in a tug-o-war with the Whites over that top spot all season. They trail them by just the one point thus having what equates to a two-game advantage over Scott Parker’s outfit just below them.

The Athletic goes on to state that “the plans, which are likely to be revealed in the next 48 hours, will afford maximum flexibility with FIFA appreciating the spread of coronavirus is different in each country.” They also state that ‘null and void’ options are not specifically “off the table” but do say that the impending announcement reduces the need to cancel seasons.

In 48 hours, Leeds United and West Brom fans look like they will get the good news that some of them have been waiting for – that seasons are going to be allowed to play out to their natural conclusions.
