According to TEAMtalk, Burnley defender Ben Gibson is to be offered to the MLS in the USA, making the switch back to his former side Middlesbrough seem unlikely this summer.
Gibson has been allowed to train with Middlesbrough away from Turf Moor after a reported disagreement between the player and the staff at Burnley.
However, it looks increasingly unlikely that Gibson would be allowed to re-join his boyhood club and return to Teesside.
Reports today state that the 27-year old has been offered to the MLS, with several franchises interested. This could mean the clubs in the USA would have the first refusal on Gibson before being offered to the likes of Middlesbrough and Premier League side Watford, who placed a bid in January, although Burnley’s asking price for the player was not met.
LA Galaxy are reportedly leading the chase for Gibson, and with Galaxy’s former player Robbie Keane the Assistant Coach at Middlesbrough, he could have an influence on where the defender decides to move next.
Since arriving at Burnley from the Riverside, he has played just once in the Premier League, scoring the Clarets only goal of the game in a 5-1 home defeat to Everton in December 2018.
Since then he has been limited to appearances in various cup competitions, but has failed to make an impact. He has since been placed on the transfer list, but Burnley will be hoping to accrue some of, if not all of the £15 million fee paid to Middlesbrough two years ago.
