Preston’s Maguire is optimistic ahead of Luton Town clash

Speaking to the club’s official website, Preston North End forward Sean Maguire has admitted that the camp is very optimistic ahead of their clash against Luton Town.

Preston North End have endured a season of inconsistency, something that has prevented them from making an unthinkable charge into the automatic promotion places.

But, as we enter the final nine games of the season, it seems a finish in the play-offs could be a realistic ambition for Alex Neil’s side.

The Whites find themselves in 6th position with a solitary point keeping them above Bristol City. However, after losing three games on the bounce, it’s their current struggle for wins that is threatening to derail their play-off ambitions.

Preston’s reaction to a defeat is something that has impressed throughout the season, whilst their 3-1 defeat last time out to ten-man Queens Park Rangers will be a test to the resolve of Alex Neil’s side who will be hoping for an immediate reaction.

The White’s travel to second-bottom Luton Town who continues to be a tough proposition for any traveling side. The Hatter’s have won three of their last four home matches, drawing the other to relegation-threatened Stoke City.

Therefore, a fixture against a side battle-heartened to their relegation fears is a game that will pose a threat to Preston’s immediate play-off ambitions.

Speaking to iFollow PNE, Republic of Ireland international Sean Maguire has suggested the camp is very optimistic and won’t allow the frustration of recent results to impact their season:

“At the moment there is a sense of frustration amongst ourselves as players, the staff and the fans, having lost four out of five games,” he told iFollow PNE.

“But I still think there is nothing to worry about, in terms of being in sixth place with nine games to go.

“The last five games have not gone to plan, but it is not like in those games we have played particularly badly.
“I felt that in the first half against QPR we were brilliant – our game plan went perfectly and in the second half we didn’t do the basic things we have done all season to our usual standards, but with the position we are in, with nine games to go, it is pretty decent and the mood around the camp is very optimistic about these games and where we want to be come the end of the season.”
Maguire spoke about his long association with this weekends opposition Luton Town and said how it will be special for him to make a return to Kenilworth Road:
“It is going to be my second every time playing at Kenilworth Road.
“I went there numerous times when I was growing up watching Luton when I was younger. I have quite a number of family still in Luton and quite a number heading over and it will be a good occasion, but I am there to do one job and that is to get us back to winning ways.
“It will be pretty special going there, having grown up watching Luton play when I was younger and it is going to be a tough test.
“Luton are scrapping down near the bottom of the league and Kenilworth Road is a very tight ground and the way they play won’t make it easy, but we will work on their strengths and weaknesses this week and hopefully get a result there on Saturday”
