Speaking to Peterborough Today, Darren Ferguson has claimed Ivan Toney is one of the best strikers he’s managed, along with Britt Assombalonga and Dwight Gayle.

Toney is the leading scorer in League One with 24 goals in 35 games, also registering five assists in that time, and Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has claimed he is one of the best strikers he has ever managed.

“Ivan is different to all the other top strikers I have managed because he can play well as a target man,” he said.

“Obviously there is far more to his game than that, but that physicality and strength when you can also play so well technically is a real bonus.”

Ferguson compared him to some of the other forwards he has managed in his time as a coach, drawing similarities to Britt Assombalonga, now of Middlesbrough, and Dwight Gayle, who now plies his trade for Newcastle United in the Premier League.

“I would put him right up there with the likes of Aaron (Mclean), Britt and Dwight as the best strikers I’ve managed and only time will tell whether or not he enjoys careers as good as those. He certainly has a chance.”

Both Gayle and Assombaloga worked under Ferguson during their time at Peterborough, with the former having played for the Posh between 2012 and 2013, and the latter spending the 2013-14 campaign at the London Road Stadium before moving to Nottingham Forest.

“I’m lucky to have managed so many top strikers,” said Ferguson, “but I didn’t foresee Ivan becoming this good so quickly when I walked through the door 14 months ago.”
