Former Leeds United defender Alex Bruce claims Marcelo Bielsa has been ‘found out’ in the Championship

Former Leeds United defender Alex Bruce has claimed that Marcelo Bielsa has been ‘found out’ in the Championship in an interview with Football Insider.

Bruce says that the rigours and demands of Bielsa’s training methods are too much for the players to handle along with the physicality of the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa is renowned for his intense training regimes and for sticking to a settled team and generally not changing his starting XI but Bruce thinks it could be time for the Argentine boss to adapt his methods.

“When you think of the leagues that he’s been in and managed in, there’s only one Championship. Physical-wise, you play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday – it’s relentless, speaking from experience,” Bruce said.

“It’s probably the toughest league possible, I found the Championship physically harder than the Premier League because you play two games a week all year. You don’t get any mid-season breaks or anything like that.”

“Whether he hasn’t adapted to it, I’m not sure, I’ve never worked with him so I wouldn’t know. However, if you do go into it and you’re not keen to change your ways or change your methods to suit how the Championship is, nine times out of ten you’ll get found out.”

Leeds are currently in second place in the Championship and seven points behind league leaders West Bromwich Albion who won 2-0 against Preston North End on Tuesday evening to extend their lead at the top.

The Whites travel to Middlesbrough this evening looking to build a further advantage over third-placed Nottingham Forest and cement their place in the automatic promotion places.
