Wigan Athletic suffer “absolute hammer blow” – playmaker Dowell sidelined through ankle injury

Speaking to Wigan Today, Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook has confirmed that loaned in playmaker Kieran Dowell will be out of action for “a few weeks” after suffering an ankle injury in training.

Since swapping Derby County for Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window, Everton’s loaned out midfielder Kieran Dowell has played four times across all competitions for the Latics, providing one assist in the process.

Dowell has not featured since late January after he was stretchered off during the second half of Wigan’s 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday and now, manager Paul Cook has provided an update on the midfielder’s injury.

Speaking to Wigan Today, Cook confirmed that Dowell will be out of action for “at least a few weeks” after going over on his ankle during training. He said:

“Kieran will be missing for at least a few weeks with an ankle injury. And it’s an absolute hammer blow for us. He went over on his ankle at the beginning of the week in training.

“Obviously these are big blows, but this is football, and you just get on with it. We’ve had it all season, and it’s been painful at times. But it’s no use moaning or sulking, you’ve just got to get on with it.”

Dowell is now set to miss some of the Latics’ relegation battle, as Wigan once again prepare to fight off relegation to League One, with the club currently sitting in 22nd place, three points clear off bottom-placed Barnsley and three points behind Stoke City, who sit just outside of the bottom three on 34 points.
